![]() Giancarlo Esposito was 56 at the time of filming. Thomas describes him as "young" in the book, so no older than 40. After the End: While it was first mentioned at the end of the first movie, here we actually get to see the shattered remains of civilization post-solar flare. In the film, she works for WICKED because she genuinely believes that they are capable of finding a cure for the Flare virus. In the book, she works for WICKED because they threatened to kill Thomas if she refused. In the book, he is far more morally ambiguous and treats Thomas merely as a pawn for his own ends. In the film, they are survivors of the Flare who happen to live near WCKD's headquarters. They are both agents of WICKED in the book, sent to take notes regarding the progress of the Scorch Trials. No such thing happens in the film and he is just a victim of WCKD as everyone else (except for Teresa). In the book, he is in full league with WICKED throughout the ordeal in the Scorch and assists Teresa in her plan to deceive Thomas. ![]() However, unlike in the book WCKD are no longer in their control of the Gladers who have already escaped from them and don't have the level of technology required to artificially make or manipulate a storm like their book counterparts had, making it unclear how apparently naturally occurring lightning is able to chase someone. The film keeps this scene, but only having Minho being the one struck and removing Thomass theorizing. Its implied, and outright speculated In-Universe by Thomas, that the lighting is being artificially created by WICKED. Adaptation-Induced Plot Hole: In The Scorch Trials while travelling across the scorch the Gladers are caught in the middle of a lightning storm, where the lightning appears to be actively chasing them, with several characters getting struck.Adaptation Distillation: Most of the second book is distilled to incorporate elements of the third book, The Death Cure.Adapted Out: The "Bulb Monsters" that appeared during the climax of The Scorch Trials, don't appear in this movie.Despite this movie being the film adaptation of the second book The Scorch Trials, the group is revealed to exist about a third of the way through the movie, and the plot then becomes about the protagonists finding and meeting up with them - which they do shortly before the climax. Adaptational Early Appearance: In the original book trilogy, the Right Arm, a resistant movement working against W.I.C.K.E.D, are introduced in the third book The Death Cure.Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials contains examples of: Thomas leads his friends through many dangers in search of the truth. This film is followed by Maze Runner: The Death Cure. The boys will never be free of the Maze or the Scorch until the truth about WCKD and the experiments is known. John 8:32 says, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” Truth is what Thomas is seeking in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Jesus defines himself as the Way, Truth, and Life. The theme of seeking truth will resonate with Christian audiences. Hopefully with the last film of the trilogy, the confusion will be gone…hopefully. Thomas’s desire for truth never wavers and leads him to continue to risk his life in search of freedom from WCKD. Once out of the maze, the little information they glean leaves more questions than answers, for the audience as well as the characters. The desire to know the truth about the Maze led Thomas and his companions to risk their lives to escape it. Scorch Trials does not present any new themes or much character development but it does cement the concepts of truth and freedom that The Maze Runner introduced. As long as the Right Arm is fighting WCKD, Thomas doesn’t really care who they are, he just wants to bring WCKD down. Picking up pieces of gossip here and there of an army of resistance fighters called the Right Arm, Thomas, Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), and Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) head across the barren wasteland of The Scorch, guided by Jorge and tough-as-nails Brenda (Rosa Salazar). We get treated to a prison break, zombie chase, and Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito), a crazy, godfather-like character who, begrudgingly, offers help. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials keeps the same speedy pace and heart-pounding action as its predecessor even though there are no mazes. Having escaped the Maze, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers get picked up by Janson (Aidan Gillen) and escorted to hot showers and hot meals together with other teens who have escaped their own mazes. This second installment in The Maze Runner series begins right where the first film ends off.
